Green Award earned twice over

Helping other businesses become more environmentally friendly made it fitting that Amalgamated Facilities Management should collect an Environment Department 'Keep Guernsey Green' Award.

AFM received the award from Environment minister Peter Sirett yesterday for its efforts in conserving energy and managing waste.

Deputy Sirett believed the award was fully merited, not only for AFM's own efforts in-house, but for the work it did with other businesses.

'They set the standards for everyone else and help other businesses achieve these standards so it's fitting for them to get the award themselves' he said.

'It was good to see a practical demonstration of how to maximise energy while minimising costs. You can see a real difference on the balance sheet and it's for the good of the whole island, so everyone benefits.'

Charmaine Gallienne and Matt Guille headed the initiative within AFM.

Ms Gallienne explained 'All our waste used to go in the skips, so we removed them and installed selected recycling bins. That reduces the amount of waste going into Mont Cuet.

'The boiler and oil tank are going and we have insulated panels in the roof. We also now have timers on the printers and photocopiers as well as  movement sensors in the office for lights.

'A lot of time went into this. We wouldn't have been able to achieve this without the rest of the staff. It's been a real team effort. We must now make sure this continues so we don't drift back into the old ways'

AFM commercial director Darren Etasse was delighted. He said, 'All the staff at AFM are proud to receive this award. Charmaine and her team have worked extremely hard in ensuring our business has achieved the requirements set by the assessors.
