AFM Warns Companies to Ensure Air-Conditioning is Compliant

COMPANIES are being warned not to leave it too late to ensure that air-conditioning units are compliant with new legislation.

Following studies which showed that R22 refrigerants have a detrimental effect on the ozone layer and contribute to environmental damage, legislation was brought into effect to enforce the removal and replacement of R22 refrigeration units.

‘Many businesses across the Channel Islands will have air-conditioning units that will be included under this legislation and will be completely unaware that they need to be compliant by 2015,’ said AFM commercial manager Darren Etasse.

‘In our work as facility managers, we now that this will be a costly problem to resolve and so have spent some time looking at ways of reducing the cost and inconvenience of businesses ensuring they meet the requirements under the legislation.’

The company has been made an approved installer for Daiken which has a system which allowed the existing pipework and fan coiled units to be reused. It is organising a seminar next week to explain how the Daiken system can be integrated to existing units.

‘By utilising this system, businesses will benefit from cost-savings when compared with fitting a complete new system, will potentially see an increase in system capacity and be assured that the new system uses zero ozone depleting R410A. We believe that this is the most cost-effective solution available and the emphasis is now on ensuring that businesses are aware of the changes needed before the 2015 deadline,’ said Mr Etasse.
