Athletes at secondary schools across the island are preparing for this year's AFM Super 6 athletics competition. Now in its fifth year, the annual challenge for school years 7&8 is under way and will end with the final at Beau Sejour on Thursday 24th March.
Athletics development officer Dale Garland has been going into the schools to train the teenagers in sprinting, jumping and throwing. Students will also each undergo a bleep test to record their endurance. The top six athletes from each year in each event from across the schools will then take part in the final next month. Garland said the aim of the Super 6's was to raise awareness of athletics.
'Those students who perform well and enjoy the competition may choose to attend the Guernsey Island Amateur Athletic Club to improve on their existing skills. The competition is about making athletics accessible to everyone.' he said.
The schools taking part are La Mare de Carteret High, Les Beaucamps High, St Sampson's High, Grammar, Elizabeth College, Ladies' College and Blanchelande College.
AFM commercial director Darren Etasse said the Super 6 challenge provides youngsters with an opportunity not only to take part in an athletics competition in a friendly environment but also to go on and improve their skills if they choose to do so.
Dale, his team and the teachers will be keeping a look out for any unidentified future stars as they compete in a bleep test, overhead throwing of a medicine ball, the standing jumpand a 30m turnaround sprint. We wish all the students the best of luck and hope that they enjoy the experience,' he said.
All finalists will receive an AFM T-shirt and water bottle, with the top three in each discipline winning prizes.
